Hey Elbow share new single ‘PART 04 (Jocke’s Edit) – Out Now

Following the release of their fourth album FLOCK on March 20, Malmö-formed trio Hey Elbow unveil ‘PART 04 (Jocke’s Edit)’ as a standalone single, arriving April 8.

Originally part of the album’s continuous 40-minute, fluid and largely improvised composition, ‘PART 04’ has been extracted and reimagined into a concise, hymn-like piece of dream pop. Vocalist Julia Ringdahl leads the track through an ethereal sonic landscape, joined by guest vocalists Freja Drakenberg and Sandra Karlsson on choir arrangements. The single version is edited by Joakim Lindberg, who also produced the full album.

FLOCK will be performed live at Intonal Festival in Malmö on April 24. For this special presentation, the ensemble expands to include Malina Midera (synth) and Tove Bagge (viola). Rather than reproducing the recording, the performance is conceived as a reconstruction — a new state shaped in direct relation to space, time, and the performers present.

Since forming in Malmö in 2013, Hey Elbow have operated through a consciously non-hierarchical approach, where collective processes and deep listening replace fixed roles and traditional divisions of labor. Their music exists in constant motion: instrumental functions shift between foreground and background, melody and texture, structure and dissolution.

Across previous releases — Every Other (2015), C0C0C0 (2018), and We Three (2020) — the group has developed a distinctive sound balancing intimacy with spatial depth, where fragmentation and cohesion coexist. With FLOCK, this aesthetic evolves into a fully immersive listening environment.

Drawing from ambient, drone, free improvisation, jazz, electronic music, and choral traditions, FLOCK approaches improvisation not as a genre but as a method — rooted in attentive listening, shared responsibility, and situational decision-making.

Hey Elbow are:
Liam Amner – percussion
Ellen Pettersson – horns, electronics, synth
Julia Ringdahl – voice, guitar

With around 150 international performances, the trio have steadily refined an exploratory and process-based musical language. FLOCK can be understood as a meditation on collaboration, collective intelligence, and the fragile balance between initiating and responding — a work that resists finality and remains open.
